The most colourful way to celebrate Easter in Vienna is to attend its seasonal markets: see painted eggs and Easter decoration from Austria and neighbouring countries, Europe’s biggest egg pile (Easter Market Freyung) and snack on Austrian regional specialities.
You will find many original and unique Easter markets and celebrations in the capital. From the Easter Party in the Prater, the Easter Market at Schönbrunn Palace, to the Old Vienna Easter Market on the Freyung and the Am Hof Easter Market.
One of the most well-known is the Easter Market at Schönbrunn Palace. Entrance is free and you can enjoy great live music and stroll around the market, marvelling at the wonderful goods on offer from around 70 stalls – from all types of eggs to ceramics, jewellery, glasswork and culinary delights. Children are guaranteed to have a great time in the Easter Bunny Workshop, while looking for Easter eggs or taking part in the fun games organised for them.
The Wiener Freyung is one of the most beautiful squares in Vienna’s Old Town. This is proved not only at Christmas, but also at the Altwiener Easter Market (literally, the Old Viennese Easter Market). In addition to various delicious Easter specialties, for example the Easter lamb, there are also arts and crafts and a variety of floristry to discover. The young visitors, on the other hand, not only find themselves at Europe’s largest Eierberg, but also at the handicraft workshop and the puppet theatre.
